# A new engine, tried on a laptop

> A hands-on reading of Luxir, a new hybrid search engine, run from a Mac or Windows laptop without compiling C++.

## The problem

Most write-ups of a new search engine stop at the announcement. The useful question is whether you can put documents in and get a result out.

## The approach

Luxir ships a Linux binary. I wrote the path that runs that build in Docker, including on ARM laptops that must emulate linux/amd64, then indexes a few documents and searches them. It is a reading setup, not a benchmark.

## The conclusion

Treat a new engine as a thing you can run. Text, vectors, facets, and geo in one request is the idea. The laptop guide is there so the idea is not trapped in a slide.
